WEEK 5
Protons in Transition: Acids and Bases
Ch 14: What Are Acids and Bases, Weak Acids and Bases,The pH of
Solutions of Weak Acids and Bases
Read: Ch 14, Toolbox 4.3
Do Problems: 1, 3, 7, 13, 17, 23, 27, 33, 49, 61
- Explain how the pH of a solution is related to its hydronium ion and
hydroxide ion concentrations.
- Calculate the pH and pOH of a solution of a strong or weak acid or
base.
- Calculate the hydroxide ion concentration from a hydronium ion
concentration, and vice versa.
- Identify species as Bronsted acids or bases.
- Explain why solutions of weak acids have higher pH values than
solutions of strong acids at the same concentration.
- Write formulas for conjugate acids and bases.
- Show how the acidity constant of an acid is related to the basicity
constant of its conjugate base.
- Use Ka values to predict the relative strengths of two
acids or two bases.
- Calculate the percentage ionization of a weak acid or base.
- Calculate the pH of a solution of a polyprotic acid.
Salts in Water
Ch 15: Ions as Acids and Bases, Titrations, Buffer Solutions
Read: Ch 15.1-15.10
Do Problems: 1, 5, 11, 17, 23, 45, 49, 59
- Explain why salts of weak bases produce acidic solutions and salts of
weak acids produce basic solutions, and calculate the pH of salt
solutions.
- Interpret the features of the pH curve for the titration of a strong
or weak acid with a strong base, or a strong or weak base with a strong
acid, and calculate the pH at any point in the titration.
- Select an appropriate indicator for a given titration.
- Explain how buffer solutions resist changes in pH, and calculate the
pH of a buffer solution.
- Select an appropriate buffer for a given pH.
- Explain what is meant by the buffer capacity of a solution, and
calculate the pH change when an acid or base is added to a buffer
solution.
- Determine the relative concentrations of conjugate acid and base
needed to prepare a buffer solution with a given pH.
