Q&A for Magnetic_fluids

Question:

How should I dispose of the iron solutions?

Answer:

If you no longer have any need for the iron stock solutions, they can be disposed of down the drain after they are neutralized and diluted. The easiest way to accomplish this is to combine the iron (II) and iron (III) solutions and add ammonium hydroxide until a precipitate no longer forms. You could also use the aqueous waste from the experiments if you have no more stock ammonium hydroxide. The pH should be between 6 and 10 for drain disposal. Dilute the suspension if it is concentrated to prevent drain clogging, dispose and flush the drain with plenty of water.
